There always appears to be sales in retail outlets these days whatever time of the year but what is your position when you wish to return goods and seek a refund?
Individual outlets will have their own returns policy but in addition you also have statutory rights. Goods that are not fit for their purpose or not of satisfactory quality can be returned and exchanged for a full refund provided this is done within a reasonable period of time. If however you purchase an item that does not subsequently suit your requirements you do not have an automatic right to be able to return that item.
Of course these days shopping on line or mail order is becoming more and more popular. In these circumstances separate regulations apply as you have a cooling off period of seven days during which time you can cancel your order and return the goods.
If you are purchasing an item as a present most shops offer the facility of a gift receipt which enables the recipient to return the item to the store. As indicated above individual outlets often have their own return policies which they must abide by. Often most people do not realise however that even if you are buying in the sales you still have the same rights as when you are buying full priced items.
